beautiful eyes

Recently, my partner came to visit my parents and me in France. My parents had met her before but never in their home. It was their territory! My mother has always been extremely friendly with my previous partners and my father has always been very shy. I have always seen my parents as the archetype of heterosexual couples: married for years, two children. My views came to a sudden doubt and uncertainty when I heard my mother saying to my partner that she had 'beautiful eyes'. Beside the feeling of uneasiness that this created, I realised that I had never before even envisaged that my mum could potentially be a lesbian. What if she was? I always assume that I cannot decide people's sexuality but in this very instance I realised that I had strong prejudice against my own mother.
